Frequently Asked Questions

Adults should have a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years, depending on age, risk factors, and whether they currently wear glasses or contact lenses. Children should have their vision checked at birth, by 6 months, before school, and then every 1-2 years during school years.

Cataract surgery is typically recommended when cataracts begin to affect your quality of life or interfere with daily activities like reading, driving, or watching television. The decision for surgery should be made after consultation with your ophthalmologist at BRAR EYE Hospital.

Open-angle glaucoma, the most common type, usually has no symptoms in its early stages. As it progresses, blind spots develop in peripheral vision. Acute angle-closure glaucoma can cause severe eye pain, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, halos around lights, and redness of the eye. Regular eye exams are essential for early detection.

Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that affects the eyes. It's caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina). Early detection and treatment can significantly reduce the risk of vision loss. Treatments may include laser treatment, anti-VEGF injections, and vitrectomy surgery depending on the severity.

There are several types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) available:

  • Monofocal IOLs: Focus at one distance; typically covered by insurance
  • Multifocal IOLs: Allow focus at multiple distances (near, intermediate, far)
  • Toric IOLs: Correct astigmatism in addition to cataracts
  • Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs: Provide an extended range of vision
  • Accommodative IOLs: Move or change shape to allow focusing at different distances

Your BRAR EYE Hospital surgeon will help determine which lens is best for your specific needs.
